IRONWOOD: Main Cast

Happy Friday! I’ve been teasing the reveal of some new characters on social media, and, well, here they are. They’re still a little rough around the edges, but I just couldn’t wait to share them with you.

Ironwood is an animated series I want to produce someday. If you’re a longtime reader, you might recognize a couple of these guys from concept art that I have worked on since mid-2015. Well, you can ignore all that now. I’ve revised the character designs and settled on a style that I feel is distinct, appealing, and simple enough for animation.

Here’s the main cast: Christie, Ted, Tommy, Vincent, Indigo, Liberty, and Guzman. These seven characters are caught up in a thrilling drama set in the town of Ironwood, Nevada. I hope to tell a realistic story that audiences can relate to, while exploring themes of hope and redemption. There’ll be plenty of action too!

COMMISSION: Gundam Lady

Hiya readers! Tonight I’m posting the art on here much earlier than on social media. Only the true Dustlander fans are reading this right now.

This is a brand-new piece of art commissioned by a gal I knew in high school! It’s been fun and challenging to draw. You might think the design (a Gundam head on a human body) is a little strange, but it’s really grown on me as I’ve worked on it. It kinda reminds me of a BIONICLE mask!

Shoutout to the folks at Adobe who helped me recover this piece after Adobe Sketch glitched and deleted it about 20 hours in. I feel like I owe you guys!

IRONWOOD: Vincent 3

Check it out, everyone. I’ve had a couple of designs for Vincent Cannon (the protagonist of Ironwood) for a while now, and here they are.

The top-left version might be what he will look like in the Ironwood animated series (which isn’t real, but, y’know, there’s always hope). It was fun coloring Vincent in this relatively simple fashion, which I understand is necessary for this kind of animation. The three other designs are a little prettier, if only because I threw some paint on them in Adobe Sketch (rather than just doing blocks of color). You also get to see Vincent in various stages of undress–take that how you will.

These somewhat finalized Ironwood character designs take a while, but I hope to post more of them in the future… maybe even a full-body Vincent at some point!

THE STEAMPUNKS: Characters

It’s been too long! Geez, every time I think I’m getting back into the Dustlander groove, I get extremely busy.

This set of characters, from my Steampunks idea, represents the last of my backlog of work (at least I think so!). I drew this close to a year ago, but it definitely holds up. I’m particularly proud of the larger automaton, cleverly named Ado, because I tried to just smother him with detail. The girl, meanwhile, might need a redesign or two, or I might drop her altogether.  I’m not even sure of her name… but I hope you appreciate the close-up of her I added.

Miss Fortune

What’s up, everyone. I hope you’re all primed and ready for another character sketch, because you’re getting one. New comics are coming, albeit very slowly. Hold me accountable for those, please.

Anyway, this little leprechaun girl isn’t from a series (as if my multitude of series are official or anything). Instead, she’s actually a  Mutants & Masterminds (basically superhero D&D) character that I created–I played her in a game with my relatives just this last week. She’s kind of silly for a superhero, but I like her rustic, perky design. I think I wrote a backstory for her, but I lost it somewhere.

Foxhound

Back atcha with another Apple Notes drawing, probably the last of its kind. Adobe Sketch has layers and I was able to import the OneNote colors, so soon you’ll be seeing the same thick-outlined, colorful Dustlander style you’re so used to. Will I ever finish coloring the last comic and start on another one? Only time will tell, I guess.

The Steampunks is interesting because I have all these (hopefully) unique ideas for characters, but only a loose plot arc to work with (Ironwood‘s story is coming along quite smoothly, though). Foxhound is my most recent character for this series; I see him as being Captain Wither’s second-in-command, a war veteran with a no-nonsense attitude toward the rest of the Privateers. His majestic sideburns and keen sense for danger give him his nickname–which, like all other Steampunks characters’, is animal-based. Regardless of his personality, I do hope you like his design!

Grea

 

Well, I’m back. Life got pretty rough–like it always does–but at least I have more time to draw nowadays. It is summer, and I did get a job (yay!). I’ll be making sandwiches starting on Wednesday.

This piece isn’t anything new; in fact, I drew it shortly after I got the iPad in December and just didn’t post it. That’s how it’s been with most of my artwork–I’ll have you know that I’ve got a huge backlog of stuff ready to go. Maybe I should post something every day just to get it over with.

Oh, the description. Grea’s character hasn’t changed in the two years since I came up with her, but above is a more refined look than in her first design. I drew it using Apple’s Notes app, but I’ve since switched over to Adobe Sketch–so don’t expect to see much more in this colored pencil style.

Longlegs

Wow, I’m running out of redesigns! This is the third out of four, and it happens to be my favorite. I did it in AP World History class on the back of a worksheet, but hey, looks good to me.

Yep, it’s Longlegs… and, as I wrote in the caption above, he’s done some growing up since last time. That, and his metal appendages have been altered to look sturdier and simpler. I certainly like the changes, but do they mean anything for his character?

Well, we could go into the backstory of the costume itself. Longlegs didn’t start off his life in the Rift wearing that fanciful brown overcoat; rather, it’s given to him by fellow protagonist Grea. Before he can ask her where she got it, however, she’s already run off to her workshop to build him a new set of his iconic, well, legs. Because Longlegs is her Mandate (which means he is her sole responsibility), Grea takes great pride in designing and constructing the “Longlegs MK II”, “MK III”, and beyond. Each pair of legs has its own function, and some pack a devastating punch.

I don’t want to give too much away, though. I’ve got lots in store for you guys. See you in a few days!

Little Man

I’m back! Did you miss me?

Psych–at the time that you’re reading this, I’m somewhere out in the wilderness doing church things. But I’m currently writing this just after publishing my last post, so I really don’t feel like I’ve gone anywhere.

Compared to my previous redesign, this alteration to Little Man’s original appearance doesn’t seem too substantial. I, too, was pretty sure (at least a few months ago) that the little astronaut’s classic suit and diminutive stature would never change too much. Honestly, they haven’t, but this time around, the space explorer’s previous weapons–two heat-blasting cuffs that would function similar to Iron Man’s repulsors–have been swapped for a larger firearm complete with used ammo blasting out of its chamber. I thought that Little Man, a representative of the United States, could use a larger gun for an even bigger impression. I also think that his size relative to the blaster is quite funny. Is it just me?

I’ve really got to go. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in a few days with a continuation of this American theme! (*cough* Fourth of July *cough cough*).

Robin

It’s sort of hard to settle into summer when I have all these posts to write and publish! That, and I have loads of other things to do–I’m taking on two jobs, and I’ve got some major work to do to get my DeviantArt up-to-date. I guess I can’t complain–I’ve sort of forced this  upon myself, so…

Let’s get to the description. What you may not know about my original series The Forging is that it takes many tropes and clichés from classic medieval fairy tales–dragons, beanstalks, and magic–and turns them on their heads. One of these twists sits above this text, clothed in green and leaping away with her crossbow, poised to strike… indeed, Robin of Huud is a nod to the traditional character of Robin Hood. There are some key differences, which you’ve probably already noticed (namely, her skin tone, gender, and ethnic descent). At heart, though, Robin is the same thieving rogue we all know her/him to be… in The Forging, she is just presented in a different way.

A keen-eyed reader might notice that Robin is part of the tribe of Huud–a nomadic group mainly based in the southern portion of The Forging‘s world. Robin is a skilled combatant when armed with ranged weapons–knives, bows, boomerangs and the like–and her good friend Hera can attest to this. Indeed, prior to the events of the story, the two traveled together, with the Huud tribe taking Hera under its wing. Coincidentally, this is how Hera became so skilled with the boomerang (the tribe’s traditional weapon). The Forge, a gathering place for warriors such as these, will undoubtedly be the place of Hera and Robin’s reunion… for better or for worse.
