Chris Pratt

Hey everybody, I hope you are having better days than I am. I’m guessing you don’t come down here to read about my problems, though, so allow me to change the subject.

Here’s another assignment from my drawing class; we were told to draw the portrait of anybody we pleased, and I couldn’t think of anyone better than this famous actor (hopefully you can tell who he is without even needing to read the title). He’s pictured here based on a notable scene from Parks and Recreation, but you might know him from Guardians of the Galaxy, and/or Jurassic World. Anyway, I think he’s a great actor and a genuinely good guy, and he’s from the Seattle area, so that’s cool! This is the first “realistic” portrait I’ve posted, so any feedback would be welcome!

FANART: The Eggbuster

Hey everyone! I had planned to alternate between digital and traditional pieces throughout the summer, but I just had to post this, as it’s already on Twitter–and it’s my first piece of fanart in a while!

Of course, this fanart is more obscure than the stuff I’ve done before. It’s of Austin from the YouTube channel The Eggbuster (formerly ThatOneShowFUN). He’s not the most popular YouTuber out there, but he’s really funny and I feel like he puts a lot of effort and heart into his work, so he’s one of my favorites. His most well-known show is called Eggbusters, which is ironically about confirming or busting glitches in video games, not Easter eggs–but if you’re more into Let’s Plays or streaming, he’s got those and more. I highly recommend checking him out if you need a peaceful, fun way to pass the time.

Funnily enough, I found out that he’d colored his hair back to brown shortly after finishing the picture… but I think I’ll just leave it. It looks pretty good, right?

THE STEAMPUNKS: Foxhound

Back atcha with another Apple Notes drawing, probably the last of its kind. Adobe Sketch has layers and I was able to import the OneNote colors, so soon you’ll be seeing the same thick-outlined, colorful Dustlander style you’re so used to. Will I ever finish coloring the last comic and start on another one? Only time will tell, I guess.

The Steampunks is interesting because I have all these (hopefully) unique ideas for characters, but only a loose plot arc to work with (Ironwood‘s story is coming along quite smoothly, though). Foxhound is my most recent character for this series; I see him as being Captain Wither’s second-in-command, a war veteran with a no-nonsense attitude toward the rest of the Privateers. His majestic sideburns and keen sense for danger give him his nickname–which, like all other Steampunks characters’, is animal-based. Regardless of his personality, I do hope you like his design!

Bones

Hello all. It’s summertime, so I know the few of you who read the descriptions expect more from me; I truly am sorry that my perfectionism and lack of motivation have been getting in the way of new content. As I’ve stated before, though, I’ve got a huge backlog ready to go–so I’m working on it. Oh, we have an Instagram now, so be sure to check that out.

This is another piece from my art class, and just like the Tatooine Landscape, it was too big to fit in my printer’s scanner. We were assigned to do an observation study on ten different bones, and I think I took longer than everyone else (as usual). But I’m very proud of the end result; it’s probably the most realistic thing I’ve ever drawn. If you can’t tell, certain bones are simply in pencil, while others have been given a little colored pencil in their shading. My art teacher liked it too and it ended up going on display at the student art fair, so that’s cool.

More backlogged stuff and possibly some fanart on the way!

THE STEAMPUNKS: Grea

Well, I’m back. Life got pretty rough–like it always does–but at least I have more time to draw nowadays. It is summer, and I did get a job (yay!). I’ll be making sandwiches starting on Wednesday.

This piece isn’t anything new; in fact, I drew it shortly after I got the iPad in December and just didn’t post it. That’s how it’s been with most of my artwork–I’ll have you know that I’ve got a huge backlog of stuff ready to go. Maybe I should post something every day just to get it over with.

Oh, the description. Grea’s character hasn’t changed in the two years since I came up with her, but above is a more refined look than in her first design. I drew it using Apple’s Notes app, but I’ve since switched over to Adobe Sketch–so don’t expect to see much more in this colored pencil style.

Tatooine Landscape

Perhaps this won’t exactly reach you on the legendary Fourth of May itself (we’re all past that joke, right?), but I still wanted to pay homage to my favorite film series and probably the greatest franchise of the past 40 years. That’s why, when I was tasked with making a chalk pastel landscape in my drawing class down in Utah, my mind immediately went to Star Wars. And for my first try at something a little more artsy, I think it went pretty well! I’m considering doing more of these landscapes from the galaxy far, far away sometime soon.

I wish I could just close this post without mentioning this, and in fact it makes me uncomfortable just thinking about it… but yes, you haven’t been imagining it. Dustlander Productions has been on hiatus for much, much longer than I anticipated. The annoying thing is, I’ve got ideas for comics, and even a whole stack of new sketches and more artwork I’ve done at school, mostly ready to post. But I’ve lacked a few resources essential to maintaining the website as of recent, including time, energy, sleep, and motivation. Have I mentioned I’m just wrapping up three AP classes? Y’all know I never like to make excuses, but you’re gonna have to wait a bit longer for the next comic. I promise it’ll bring some closure to the hiatus. Thanks!

Confidence

Well friends, it’s been a while. I got my hopes up when I posted Santa, believing that I could and would get back on top of things, even with a new comic. However, I’ve run into difficulties with OneNote on my iPad and I’m currently learning to adapt my style to Adobe Sketch. We’ll see how that goes.

Utah hasn’t been what I expected… and that’s a good thing! Things have definitely changed. There’s still snow down here, even with track about to start; I have some form of a social life now, even if classes aren’t much easier. That leaves less time to draw, but more time to reflect–especially on what I need and don’t need in my life. Dustlander Productions’ second birthday passed on the 17th, and I did nothing to commemorate it. So you could say I’ve decided I need drawing and comics and shenanigans back in my life again–but I don’t know when I’ll have time for them.

Today’s the two-year anniversary of the second comic “2. Homecoming”–one of my favorites. Guys, here’s the truth. I’m not always confident. If you’re confident 24/7, there’s something wrong with you. But where we lack confidence, we can have faith–hoping for something better and then doing everything in our power to make it happen. I do know that is possible. So don’t look down like Art here–there are better days ahead!

TIME-LAPSE: “11. Drawing”

With school having started a few weeks ago, I can’t tell y’all how good it feels to finally post something. That’s right–it’s the time-lapse of “11. Drawing” that’s been in development heck for the past four months! Hopefully it doesn’t jump around too fast for you (I might make an slower extended version to remedy that…).

I’ve also got an announcement to make. Time-lapses are a nice addition to the extensive amount of drawing I do, but they definitely take up a lot of my time (no pun intended). In this video, for example, I had to cut, paste, and speed up over twenty hours of footage–no joke! That’s why I’m deciding not to make any more time-lapses–at least not for the regular comics. I’d rather make higher-quality content for all of you to enjoy, like more comics and more animations, than spend time on this sort of novelty video. They’re neat, but that’s the extent of their value to me. (The soundtrack is legit too.)

Thanks all for your support in making these videos–I’m not through with YouTube just yet, but it’ll take time before I have anything new to post. Hopefully I’ll surprise you guys with some of my upcoming work, though!
